Who can use our legal advice services?

We work with Deaf and disabled New Zealanders who have a legal issue related to their disability, who can't otherwise access a lawyer. This is subject to our resources and staffing capacity.

What legal issues can we help you with? 

We can help with disability-related legal problems, including: 

  • Employment issues – Unfair dismissal, workplace discrimination, restructuring, or issues with your employer.
  • Discrimination and human rights – Being treated unfairly because of your disability in work, housing, or public spaces.
  • Guardianship & property – Problems with Guardianship Orders, financial decisions, or property rights.
  • Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) – Understanding or disputing EPA decisions.
  • Supported decision-making – Help with legal processes for making decisions with support.
  • Police complaints – Issues with police treatment or interactions.
  • Carers and support workers – Issues with care agreements, rights, and disputes.
  • Housing and tenancy – Problems with landlords, discrimination in renting, or tenancy disputes.
  • Consumer rights – Disability issues with banks, contracts, or unfair service practices.
  • Contractual issues – Problems with agreements, disputes over terms, or legal contracts.
  • Unfair service practices – For example, parking disputes.
  • Bank issues – Problems with banking access, financial discrimination, or disputes.
  • Cyberbullying and online harassment – Issues with online abuse, harassment, or discrimination.

In most cases ADL does not undertake Court work. If your case needs to go to court, we’ll refer you to a lawyer who can help.

We’ll look into your matter and see if we can help, including an eligibility check. 

If we can’t provide legal advice, we’ll refer you to another service that can. 

Step 3: Meet with one of our lawyers 

We can meet via Zoom or phone to discuss your needs. 

Our team is based in Auckland, but we can support people anywhere in New Zealand remotely. 

Step 4: Take action 

We’ll give you advice and help you communicate with the other parties.

If needed, we’ll help negotiate, mediate, or take further action (e.g., tenancy tribunal). 

If your case needs to go to court, we’ll refer you to a lawyer who can help.
